Shanni Bukhari, 24-year old British Muslim, is hoping to become the first Muslim to represent Britain at the Miss Universe contest. According to CNN, she has gotten "indirect" threats against her life.
Indirect threats have been made," she said, including video links being posted of men "suggesting things could possibly happen."
While there had been no direct threats against her, she said, "it is upsetting to receive links of certain things that could possibly endanger someone’s life."
"My intentions were not to bring my religion into this," she said.
She said she would participate in the swimsuit round of the contest, but would not be "exposing revealing parts of my body."
"I will not be wearing a bikini," she said. "I will be wearing a one-piece swimsuit and a sarong."Source: religion.blogs.cnn.com
She was born in Blackburn and studied English literature at Bolton University.
Miss Bukhari, from Manchester, said: ‘I want other girls from Muslim communities to feel they can do this.
She said: ‘Three men wrote that they would not support me because what I was doing was sinful.
‘They said I should rot in hell which is pretty shocking.
‘But they contradict themselves by going out clubbing, drinking and smoking.’
She added: ‘I have had amazing support from the Asian/Pakistani community right across the UK and they want me to do well.
‘These competitions are not just about beauty, they are about brains and personality as well.’
If she wins Miss Universe GB at the ICC Birmingham on May 1, she will go on to the final in Sao Paulo on September 12.
Her Blog on Miss Universe GB –
I am 24 and from Manchester and have studied English Literature BA hons. From a young age, I have been taught by my family how to make the best of life. This teaching is a blessing and I would like to use what they have taught me to help others in this world. I am a well-rounded candidate with the right qualities to strive to support good causes through which I in turn would hope to gain valuable experiences. I have had a great number of experiences in campaigning for the Pakistan flood appeals to help the thousands of victims that were hit by the worse rainfall in 80 years. Thousands lost their lives and millions more were affected – and my aim was to help raise as much as charity to help rebuild homes, help provide aids in the form of food and shelter. Helping people in need is something I have always been passionate about and I believe that this is a gift I am given from God. It is something I thoroughly enjoy and makes me feel happy knowing I am helping those in need. I look for bigger and better changes and I plan to deliver bigger and better results in what I do. I am very committed and passionate about making a difference. Source: www.missuniversegb.co.uk
