Tuesday’s earthquake at Haiti has left more than 100,000 people dead and a lot more injured. The magnitude of 7.0 tremor at Haiti has been the worst in the last 200 years. The country needs our support.
The earthquake, the most powerful to hit Haiti in 200 years, struck at 4.53pm local time (9.53pm GMT) yesterday, about 10 miles south-west of Port-au-Prince. Seismologists said it was particularly damaging because it was a relatively shallow tremor, causing greater shaking at surface level.
René Préval said the damage caused by the magnitude 7.0 tremor was “unimaginable” and appealed for help, describing hearing the screams of those trapped under collapsed buildings while he and his wife stepped over bodies lying in the streets.
“Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed. There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them. All of the hospitals are packed with people. It is a catastrophe,” said Préval.
American Idol started the “text to donate” event which was very successful for “Keep a Child Alive charity”. Similar efforts have been started for Haiti Earthquake relief fund. But please beware of the scams. Some of the legitimate ones I found are –
For US –
- Text “YELE” to “501501” to give $5 to Hip hop star Wyclef Jean’s Yéle Haiti charity
- Text “HAITI” to “90999” to donate $10 to the Red Cross
For Canada –
- Text “Haiti” to 45678 to give $5 Salvation Army.
The money is added to your monthly cellphone bill.
And shame on the scamsters!
